Do You Suffer from Information Overload Syndrome?
Do you suffer from information overload? When i was first learning internet marketing, I was presented with so much information that I couldn’t make any sense of it. I felt even more dumb about the concept than before. You could say I suffered from information overload syndrome.
This occurrence happens quite frequently among people. There are ways to avoid this from happening to you so you don’t feel lost and confused. If you’re looking to start your own home based business and learn how to market and advertise, there’s a lot of information to sift through. Even in the corporate business world, this is a huge problem.
Dealing with a lot of information all at once can be a nightmare. It can literally make your head spin, and you’re left wondering where to even start. Here’s what I did to combat my information overload problem and how you can do the same.
Tips to prevent information overload:
- Take a deep breath and relax
- Take a break (as long as you need) and let your mind sort through the information you just read. Go back later to anything that still doesn’t make sense.
- Evaluate where you are right now, and where you want to be
- Set small goals for yourself, utilizing only the pertinent information to reach those goals
- Tackle only one project at a time (this tip is a lifesaver!)
These tips are geared more towards entrepreneurs looking to work from home who are faced with heaps of information right from the start. Of course, these tips can be applied to any individual, but they should be tailored specifically to your needs.
The other option is to not do anything about your information overload problem, in which case you could end up like the people in this video…

Alan,
Very clever . . . writing a post that works around the video, which is quite insightful and humorous by the way! Information overload – oh, so true!
Internet marketers get an overload of new programs, emails, articles, blogs, and other materials to sort through that it’s a wonder we can even type comments anymore!

@Bob W., Thanks Bob! You’re totally right… there’s so much information out there I’m surprised we even remember how to type LOL. I just stumbled upon the video and wanted to do a post like this for some time now, so they both went together nicely.

Hi Alan, information overload probably is one of the great killers of the newbie marketer. There is so much to learn. But if you concentrate on learning one task at a time and becoming proficient before moving on it can become manageable. Maybe you should start a support group like AA for those suffering from IOS!! I definitely suffer from this! The problem i have at work is I have collected far too much data. Which is great, but trying to figure out what to do with it has you scratching your head.

You are so right about information overload. I would literally go to bed at night with my head spinning and get up in the morning in about the same shape. It is starting to become a lot easiernow, but I have just had to eliminate some email for now and concentrate on just the tasks at hand.

@Lyle Holmes, Hey Lyle, welcome to my blog. I’ve been there, and it’s tough at first. It’s important to just find one thing you can do to help your business progress, and focus solely on that until it’s done. Forget about everything else until you’re ready to tackle something else. It’s also very easy to get distracted with the other million things you know there is to do.

I’m experiencing information overload too. As of this moment, seems like I don’t know where to start despite of having enough knowledge of what I would like to now. Maybe, it’s just a matter of selecting pertinent and non-pertinent data.

You can’t avoid information overload unless you were able to discipline yourself. Everyone need to know how they can start something but too much can be very paralyzing on their part.
