2012 is here, and this year I’m going to start a tradition… a recap of the previous year, highlighting popular posts, and posts I feel are important to visit (or revisit).

2011 brought many challenges and changes, positives and negatives, and ups and downs, for me both personally and professionally.

My online business, including this blog, has seen steady growth. Slight changes were made here and there as needed, and are still being made… not enough to probably notice, though. Income sources have come and gone, as is common with this type of business.

Overall, I am very pleased in the direction my business is headed, and I’m looking forward to growing it even more.

With that said, I once again want to thank you, my readers, for your support and encouragement over the past year(s) and for your continued support. It would be very difficult to be here without any of you, and I know I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for your active participation here on the blog.

Your comments, “likes”, +1′s and Re-Tweets are extremely appreciated. It’s because of you that I’m able to showcase some of the most popular posts of 2011.

I also decided, at my discretion, to include other notable posts from the past year that I feel are worth mentioning. These include guest posts from esteemed authors in related fields.

I’ve broken up the posts into categories to make them easier to sift through. Oh, and the posts are in no particular order whatsoever.

I hope you find the “best” posts from 2011 inspirational and helpful as you embark on your journey through 2012.

Without further ado, here they are…

I’m curious to know which post you liked the most from last year, so scroll down to the comment area and let me know.

Did I leave something out?

For obvious reasons, I couldn’t include every single post. They don’t make computer screens big enough, or attention spans long enough, for that. If you’ve enjoyed a particular post that I didn’t mention, or enjoy reading my monthly blog post roundups or Income Reports, let me know.

Wishing you a prosperous 2012!

December is officially here. Only 24 days until Christmas! Yes, I’m very excited. But, we can’t forget about Thanksgiving which occurred just a week ago. I had a great time spending it with family and friends, and I’m looking forward to doing the same here in the coming weeks.

I went Black Friday shopping for the first time ever. Got a Blu-Ray player and some movies, finally! I apologize for not getting the announcement up about the HostGator 50% deal going on then as I was busy. You can still get an amazing price on hosting by going here and entering “wordpress” into the coupon section during checkout. You’ll get your first month for one penny.

Enough about me, how did you spend your Thanksgiving holiday? Get any good Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals? Share in the comments below.

If you’re in the process of getting a site designed (or even redesigned) for SEO purposes, you might be hearing the term ‘call to action’ quite frequently, but might be unsure about what it means.

A ‘call to action’ is a way of getting visitors to your site to undertake some kind of action as a result of reading or seeing something on your site. For example, a ‘Join our Facebook page’ button could inspire the visitor click on this button to view your Facebook page, and if they like what they see, to join it. A lot of visitors to websites tend to be reactive, which makes a ‘Call to action’ the ideal way to entice visitors into doing more than just reading your site.

What is the Best Way to Get Visitors to Your Site to Use Your ‘Calls to Action’?

Determining the best location for your ‘call to action’ is important. It should be placed high on the page, and should not require the visitor to have to scroll to see it. ‘Calls to action’ don’t have to be restricted to your home page, in fact, all pages in your site will benefit from ‘call to action’, which continue to lead the visitor through your site. Thought should be given to what you want the ‘calls to action’ to achieve, and set up in such a way they achieve the main goal of your site.

Ensure that All ‘Calls to Action’ Are Easy to Follow

When adding a ‘Call to action’, they need to be clear and easy to understand, which helps to inform the visitor of the potential result of clicking on a ‘Call to action’. However, don’t have too many ‘calls to action’ throughout your site, as too much choice is overwhelming and can result in no action being taken by the visitor.

Highlight the Benefits

Most visitors to your site won’t utilise a ‘Call to action’ unless they know the benefit it will bring to them. Highlighting why taking a particular action is a good idea helps to entice a customer to click on the ‘call to action’. Offering a ‘freebie’ as a result of completing the ‘call to action’ is also an excellent way of inspiring action from visitors.

Consider the Language that is Used

Aside from being clear and easy to understand, a ‘call to action’ that promotes a sense of urgency can generate better results. Using words such as ‘free’, ‘limited’, or ‘discount’ are more likely to get a ‘call to action’ acted upon.

‘Calls to action’ are imperative when it comes to visitors taking action on your site, and if done correctly, is an excellent way to further a connection with visitors and ensure continued success for your site.

Are you using guest blogging to promote your business? If no, then you might be missing on something really big as far as your marketing effort is concerned. This article will provide 5 ways that you can benefit from guest blogging.

Here they are…

Reputation Building

The first advantage of guest blogging is that it can help you build your brand on the internet. Indeed, by publishing content on some authority sites you can help other people become acquainted to your brand and hence build a reputation online. But, for this to happen, you will need to make sure that your articles are really useful and that they really add value for your readers. After a short while people will begin to consider you as an expert in the field.

Massive Traffic

Another advantage of guest blogging is that it can help you get some really good traffic without relying solely on the search engines. Normally if your post is good enough, people will be interested to visit your site in order to learn more about you. And, if you published your post in some related sites you will be in a position to get some targeted traffic that may boost your sales. This benefit of guest blogging can be really useful for new blogs that have yet to get a ranking in the search engines.

New Market

Guest blogging can also help you target a market that you may have thought impossible before. By guest posting on some other blogs, you may be able to place your product in front of people that you would not have considered before. This can help you generate some new ideas that may be helpful when it comes to developing your business.

SEO

If you are a seasoned internet marketer you will know that the whole SEO game revolves around backlinks. Backlinks from real blogs that have real traffic can be really useful when it comes to boosting your site in the SERPs. This is why it might be useful that you look for blogs that have high PR and Alexa rank in order to get the most benefit.

Guest blogging can also be a useful alternative to article submissions. Following the Google Panda update, article directories have lost some of their effectiveness, and guest blogging can be a capable replacement when it comes to link building.

Social Media Benefits

Another advantage associated with guest blogging is that it allows you to take advantage of the host blog’s strength in social media. In the majority of cases, your article will be shared to the host blog’s Twitter followers or Facebook Fanpage, thus allowing you to take advantage of the site’s strength with social media sites. One idea will be to make it easy for visitors to share your content across social media sites. Place your Twitter and Facebook button in a visible position to encourage the sharing of your site on the different social media sites.

New Contacts

Guest blogging can also be instrumental when it comes to making new contacts. This can indeed create some opportunities for you to meet new people – not only fellow webmasters but also some readers of the host blogs. This can be a great opportunity for you to meet some other business professionals that might be interested in a possible joint-venture.

Guest blogging can be really effective when it comes to promoting your business online. It can help your site get instant traffic, break into new markets, improve your SERPs and also allow you to increase your social media reach. Whatever your business might be, you are definitely going to benefit from guest blogging.

I know, I know, it’s been live for a little while now. And, don’t worry, I’ll spare you the boring details about Google’s new social button that’s supposed to be the arch-rival to Facebook’s “Like” button. You can read all the intricate details about it here, straight from Google’s mouth.

+1 Blog Posts

This post is an announcement to let you all know, my readers, that I have decided to implement the Google +1 button on this blog. It is now LIVE on the blog. You can find it at the top of each post, on the home page as well as each individual post page.

Why?

Because it’s new. I like to try new things and see how they perform. Also, it’s Google we’re talking about. They’re the biggest search engine, period. If they implement a new change that could affect website rankings and overall website traffic, I think it’s best to pay attention and play their game.

Social Search and Impact on SEO

Will their new introduction to Social Search take hold? I really don’t know. Should we care? Yes! At this stage it’s only an experiment, but it’s possible it could be here to stay.

There’s a lot of hearsay floating around as to how this is going to affect SEO and the way personalized search engine results are served. I really don’t want to get into all of that here as plenty has been said about it elsewhere. But, if you want to learn more about the Google +1 button and the future implications it could have on search, I recommend you check out these links:

That should provide everything you need to know about the +1 button.

Now, if you’re interested in adding it to your own site or blog, it’s actually real simple.

How to Add the Button to Your Site or Blog

For those of you who run a static (non-Wordpress) site:

Log-in to your Google Webmaster’s Account and follow the simple instructions: http://www.google.com/webmasters/+1/button/

For those of you who run a WordPress blog:

Garry Conn offers simple to understand instructions to add the button to your posts and pages: Google +1 Button.

Now you’re set. You’ll be able to invite your friends and website visitors to click and +1 your sites, blogs, and blog posts.

And, if you found this post helpful, I’d appreciate some +1 love from ya if you have some to spare. *hint, hint* ;)

The following is a guest post by Carol Abedania. If you would like to write for this blog, please check out the guidelines here.

Online marketing is a good avenue for small businesses to do promotion.  It allows you to set aside a budget-friendly amount of money yet offers many options for you to market your products and services. By investing enough time and effort to make effective online marketing strategies, you’ll see how useful the internet is for your small business.

As a small business, creating your own TV or radio ad and using super-enlarged billboards on public places may not be realistic since these tend to be expensive. However, you can still reach a wider audience through the internet. This is the reason why online marketing is used by many businesses today. Online marketing can be done several ways. Here are tips on how you can do online promotions:

Smart Tips for Small Business Online Promotion

1. Optimize Your Site

An optimized page can rank well on search engines. To gain traffic and be found on search engines’ first pages for related search queries can require much optimization strategizing. One of the basic ways to optimize a site is by doing on-page optimization. Your pages’ link structures, keyword use, titles and content are important elements for on-page optimization. Study the basics about these SEO strategies and apply them to your entire site, and eventually you can go take on more sophisticated strategies like link building and site usability. This may all seem complicated at first, but even taking small steps in this direction could help a long way!

2. Use Social Media

One good thing about social media is that is it a very interactive medium where you can instantly reach and communicate with your target market. Many businesses use social media for promotion. It can keep your customers updated on any latest news from you. Customer engaging techniques like contests, product giveaways, and other promos can be done through social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and other community sites. Promotion for your website to gain traffic can also be done using social bookmarking sites such as StumbleUpon, Reddit, Digg and Mixx. Also, you can use social media to brand your business and increase the strength of its identity. There are also other available social media sites like YouTube where your video creation and promotion can possibly go viral.

3. Content Marketing

Content is king. Engaging content is the key to increase traffic to your website and gain more potential customers. Internet users today tend to look for sites that are useful and will give them the information they need. The quality of the information you produce can encourage visitors to stay longer in your site, trust your brand and recommend it to other people. An optimized page will be useless if people who visit them find the content unhelpful. It can even cause bounce rates to your site, or worse, give you a bad reputation. To make quality and appealing content, you need to inspire and make them want your product. The power of words is a strong marketing weapon that can influence a customer to move and make transactions.

4. Create Your Own Blog

Creating blogs can give you a lot of benefits. Aside from getting links from other people’s mentions of your posts and promoting your business website in general, it is also a medium for direct communication with your market. Blogs can be an avenue for you to brand your business, get connections, and participate in a community where you can gain more customers. By creating useful content, you can build a credible brand with authority. Using blogs also offers you the chance of building reputation through participating actively in the blogosphere, having product reviews and interacting in blogger community forums.

5. Mail Updates and Newsletters

Mailing lists are important so new blog posts and other updates from your website can be sent to your audience right away via email. There are many forms of mailing lists you can use for promotion and updates. For blogs, there are email subscriptions complementary to their usual RSS feeds where readers can also subscribe for post updates. Company websites typically use mailing lists to update their audiences about their latest promos. To convince them to participate, you can use audience-engaging techniques where your customers can be given exclusive benefits, giveaways and freebies like your branded calendars, postcards, or business cards. These are products that your subscribers can use frequently so they are often reminded about your brand at the same time.

Although the work might be very tedious, it’s all worth the time once you see the results of your efforts on marketing your product and business using the web. Internet marketing is important to communicate and deliver value to your customers while also finding ways on how your business can achieve your marketing goals though customer interaction. These strategies can be a good foundation and an important investment for your business promotions online.

googlewayThe following is a guest post by Darrell Lischka of about-internetmarketing.com.

You decided that you had enough at your job and want to start building an online business to make money. Great, welcome to the internet club. Now what are you going to do? In today’s article, I will describe the process of creating an authority site and how you rank it on page 1.

The article will go over the essential elements that one should focus their time on, if they truly want to see results. This is not the fluff type of article that tells you how to make 10K a month in only 3 months. Nope, far from it, because if you truly want financial freedom, then you will have to pay a price to fire your boss. My article will cover keyword research, domains, back linking strategies to rank on page 1, niche marketing ideas and strategies, and even mentioning some software that will leverage your time more effectively.

The fact is Google is the most popular search engine and because of that, my methods will be related to ranking well on their search engine.

Authority Site

My definition of an authority site is simple. It’s a website that ranks on page 1 of G. The fact is authority sites come in all types and sizes. They can range from a 1 page website, to hundreds of pages.

How to make money with proper keyword research

When I first got started, I listened to someone that I honestly believed knew what they were talking about. I found out later, they were just trying to up sell me with their own marketing system. So I learned the hard way and wasted a lot of time trying to figure out keyword research. I was new at this SEO game several years ago. I made the same mistakes the that newbies make, by going after the big keyword categories. Forget the big keywords when you are starting off. Go after the low competitive terms. It will literally save you time, money and of course some sleepless nights.

Niche Marketing Tactics – What The A-Listers Won’t Tell You

My advice in terms of niche marketing ideas and niche marketing strategies, is to start at the low end and work your way up the keyword ladder. For example, search for key phrases that range between 10 to 20 searches a day. Your competitors will be lower in that niche market, than attempting to rank for large key phrase categories. Better to start out small, build up your rankings for a number of low phrases and start earning some cash, than waiting 6 to 12 months or more to see results. Successful individuals who earn money online, use this approach all the time.

Domains

Before you register any domain names, first get your keyword research out of the way. The reason, you should when possible, try and include your keyword phrase in your domain name. You certainly don’t have to, but it will give you a little extra SEO juice based on personal experience. You can of course take any domain name and rank it on page 1 for essentially any keyword category. But any advantage that you can get, make sure you do because your competitors are doing it.

Another tip that you can do when registering a domain name, is to see if there’s a domain available for sale with that term. Now, I would never suggest you invest hundreds or thousands of dollars, but depending on the niche and your financial situation, it might be worth it. I would suggest you only do this when you have some experience first.

The Importance of Getting Back Links

Back-links are the back bone of the ranking game. One way links should be mostly external, but you will also need to do some internal linking within your website. An external links means, when you post an article at an article directory like Ezine Articles, you hyper link your keyword term back to your website. That is what the SEO community means by back links.

As well, you can improve your own site by making sure your internal link structure is set up correctly. For example, for some of your pages within your website, link that page back to your home page. Don’t do it for all of them, but a few of them. As well, you can pass some link juice from 1 page to another page. Those little tips can again, give you a little bump in the rankings.

To Rank Well – You Need a Back Linking Plan

Now that I covered what external and internal links are, lets discuss how you go about getting the maximum back links for your website. It really revolves around creating content and submitting it to various article directories and Ezine directories. The most popular is Ezine articles. The best thing to do is simply type in top article directories or do follow article directories in G to get a list. There are literally thousands of places to post content.

My general approach is to post 5 to 10 unique articles at the top article directories and move on. However, there is one key piece of information that must do, to rank well and make your site strong. When you link back to your website, make sure you are deep linking 80% of the time to pages and actual articles on your website.

If you are confused, just hang on for a minute. Deep linking means your URL that you hyperlink from your article will link to an actual article within your site. Fail to do this for competitive terms and you will likely never rank on page 1. Trust me, I have made this mistake in the beginning.

You can help you website by doing some comment marketing at other forums and websites. My only caution is to make sure you add value to the discussion and not some spam type comment. Over time, you will gain recognition as someone that can be trusted and other readers in time, might start checking out your site. The more readers that go to your site and spend time there, will count towards the overall ranking game because how much time someone spends at your site is part of the algorithm for Google or better known as the bounce rate.

One final comment about back links. They are not created equally. For example a back link from Ezine articles is not the same as a back link from a brand new article directory. So, when posting your content, go for established and authority directories. To look natural, you will end up with a variety of links for all over the place. Just getting high quality back links could flag Google and that’s the last thing you want is a manual inspection and get de-indexed from the search results.

Strategies To Help Your Article Marketing Efforts

If you struggle for time like most people because they work full time, you can leverage your time more effectively by looking at software tools that help you create more versions of your article. They are referred to as article spinners or an article rewriter. If used properly, you can create dozens of unique versions. Just keep in mind, you still want quality content, but I have found it saves me time on manually editing articles and being able to post to more places.

Well, there you have the essential elements on building and ranking an authority site. Just keep in mind, start with good keyword research, picking the right domain name, niche marketing strategies and the most important part, building back links for your website.

If you want to dramatically improve your article marketing efforts and get more back links to rank higher in the search engines, Go Here: Article Rewriter.

I promised another backlink building strategy if you read my post Proven Strategies to Increase Website Traffic and Generate Sales. If you were waiting in anticipation for it, the wait is now over… it’s here!

This strategy, if used correctly, can catapult your blog posts, web pages, homepage, etc. to the top of Google and other search engines. Once you’re sitting high and mighty at the top, the sales will follow (if you’re targeting the right keywords).

To get started, you’re going to need a blog post (home page will do just fine) that you want to get a lot of traffic to. This is especially if you’re promoting something big and want to earn commissions (affiliate marketing). For your home page, you’re probably promoting something, selling your own product or building your list. In any case, you obviously want traffic, so this will work just as well.

Assuming you’ve done all the on-page SEO stuff for your blog post or home page, you’re now ready to start building backlinks. But not just any backlinks will do here. While article marketing is still very effective (and I recommend using this method as well), there’s another link building strategy that works very well.

link-wheelIt’s called a Link Wheel.

You may have heard of it before…. or maybe not. It can actually be somewhat confusing to people, so I’m going to explain it the best way I can without confusing you. ;)

If you’ve heard of this strategy before but just don’t quite GET IT yet, then pay close attention here. Better yet, the diagram above should do all the explaining that needs to be done. But, I’ll still do my best here to explain everything.

With the Link Wheel strategy, you’re capitalizing on free blogs/web 2.0/social sites. Take a look at the sites in the diagram, and you’ll notice one thing. They’re all free to use and post content to, and there’s a social aspect to them (this doesn’t really matter for the sake of this strategy). Simply put, Google and the other two major search engines love these sites.

So to get started, you need to write some articles. Anywhere from 6 to 8 articles will be sufficient.

There are some key requirements needed with these articles, though. They need to contain your keyword in the title and two or three times throughout the article body. If you haven’t done so already (you should have), your blog post should contain the same keyword in its title and content. This is very important!

The articles you write for these sites only need to be anywhere from 250 – 350 words long. You don’t need a novel here, just enough useful information to make the content relevant to the keyword you’re targeting.

If you don’t feel like writing the articles yourself, outsource it to someone else. I can get 10 articles written for $27 that do just fine. That’s actually very cheap, by the way.

Once you have your articles, you need to sign up for these free sites. Once you sign up with a site you won’t ever have to do it again. This is a one-time process.

Here are the sites I recommend. This isn’t an all-inclusive list, however. You can sign up for as many as you want. But for the sake of your link wheel you only need 6 to 8 sites.

  1. Hubpages
  2. Wetpaint
  3. Blogger
  4. WordPress.com
  5. Gather
  6. Xomba
  7. Quizilla
  8. Squidoo

There’s a couple I didn’t mention that are in the diagram. Like I said it really doesn’t matter which sites you sign up with. It’s completely up to you.

Here’s where it gets tricky…

Each article you post on a site should contain two links… one pointing to your blog post and the other pointing to the article on the next site.

BUT… those links need to contain the keyword being targeted.

For example, if I’m targeting the keyword “golf swing” then I have that in the title of both the blog post and all articles for each site as well as in the content. Also, the backlinks will contain the same keyword “golf swing.”

Follow? Just look at the diagram again and this should make sense.

Each article will do this until you’ve completed the rotation and placed one article on each site. You now have a complete Link Wheel.

Doing this correctly will boost your blog post or home page’s rankings in the search engines dramatically. Of course, you still want to perform other link building strategies I’ve mentioned in previous posts because this is not the only way I build backlinks to my posts and home page, just to clear up any confusion you may have.

Any questions about what I’ve shared regarding Link Wheels? Still don’t quite get it? Feel free to leave a comment, and I’ll do my best to answer you. :)

If you know anything about SEO, then you’ll know that keyword research is so important in attracting the right kind of traffic to your website. I consider the right kind of traffic as being people who are looking to buy something, assuming you’re wanting to sell something.

If you’re doing business online, then obviously you want to sell stuff. So, wouldn’t it make sense to target ‘paying’ keywords?

Yes, I made that name up.

I go into all the details in my guest post and provide a video which I previously posted on my blog.

To check out the article, head to David Leonhardt’s SEO Writer blog where I had the pleasure of writing, Target Paying Keywords to Maximize Your Online Sales.

This neat little tool will help you pump out more sales by targeting the right kind of keywords for your website.

Feel free to browse David’s blog as you’ll find other helpful articles on SEO, which I know can be rather bothersome to some people.
