I’ve been working from home for three years now. It’s been a bumpy ride, lot’s of stress, lot’s of fun, and lot’s of work — and it’s been worth it. But like most work-from-homers, looking back, I see many things I didn’t know when I first got started that I desperately wish I did know.

That’s what this post is about — the stuff I wish I knew when I first started.

1. How Much Work It Takes

When I first started, I was convinced that within 6 months I’d be in the Bahamas. I was bitten by the “get-rich-easy” bug. After all, how much effort can clicking and typing be? A heck of a lot — and more mental work than actual physical work. The mental work of studying, creating original strategies, and being a trailblazer for my own business is more than I originally was prepared for. Not that it’s a bad thing — it’s extremely good. But knowing what to expect would have made the first year a much better experience.

2. How Important Copywriting Is

Few things are as important to someone with a home business as copywriting. Every time I send an email, I now know how lucrative it can be — regardless of how few people read the email. Converting 1% of the readers to purchase a product might not seem like much, but understanding copywriting makes it all but inevitable. This, mixed with a strong email marketing campaign, is an extremely important income tool. I didn’t realize this until about a year ago — now over 75% of my income comes from copywriting and email marketing. I wish I knew sooner.

3. How Important Personal Branding Is

For the first year of blogging, I essentially played it by ear. I had no personal brand in mind, no coherent point, and no underlying “message” or “story” behind any of my websites. It wasn’t until late 2009 and early 2010 I realize that trust is built through narratives — that is, people trust you when they understand your brand, or your story. I started building a personal brand based on cautious investing and anti-inflation, and my conversions started to pick way up. Personal branding isn’t just classy — it’s extremely effective at increasing conversion rates for sales and signups. I wish I knew this when first starting.

4. How Fleeting Google Rankings Can Be

I’m a reformed gray-hat SEO marketer. I did everything under the book several years ago, and had achieved top 3 results for everything from dividend investing to debt consolidation. And I’ve seen those same rankings disappear after just a few months. Focusing on search engines isn’t safe. It’s volatile, and engineers in a cubicle somewhere determine the future of my business. Here today, gone tomorrow type business models aren’t good for the long haul. Personal branding and newsletter writing are great for the long haul. I’d give just about anything to have understood this back then.

5. Why Long-Term Business Is All That Matters

The short-run is soon over. The long-run is here to stay. That’s an obvious point, but if I’d known this when first starting it would have saved me a lot of sweat, blood, and stress.

Pretty much nothing is as important as building a long-term personal brand, writing quality content, and managing a strong newsletter. When it comes to working from home with an info-publishing model, everything else comes second.

By now you should know how effective article marketing is for your online business. However, there’s another way in which you can use your articles that a lot of people overlook or never think of.

There are thousands if not hundreds of thousands of ezines (electronic magazines) available on the internet. In fact, if you have an email list of subscribers, then essentially you own an ezine. And I’m guessing you provide your subscribers with useful ezine articles on a regular basis.

Keeping this in mind, have you ever found it difficult to keep creating ezine articles to send to your list? A lot of successful ezines have been around for years and have tens of thousands of subscribers. That’s a long time to try to keep creating ezine articles to keep the subscribers interested.

So, what does an ezine owner do in this case? It’s very simple. They allow other people to submit ezine articles to them which will be sent to their subscribers. Can you see the possibilities here?

This opens the doorway for you to get your message out there to thousands of people that might have never known about you otherwise. This is absolutely huge!

Here’s how it works…

You first find ezines that are related to what you do or what you provide. If you own a website or online business, then find ezines related to that. Next thing you’ll want to do is contact the ezine owner and ask if you could write articles for their ezine on a weekly basis.

If they agree, you’ve just set up a very good proposition for yourself. Now all you have to do is create an article every week for that ezine. It shouldn’t be very difficult as you should already be familiar with the niche.

Now, the most important part is to then create an “about the author” section at the end of your articles. This only has to be one or two sentences about yourself, what you do and what you provide. Of course, you’ll want to leave a link to your website so that the readers can check it out.

This results in getting interested people to visit your website. The goal is to get them to subscribe to your ezine (newsletter), make a purchase, fill out a form, click a link, etc. You want them to take action!

Ezine articles can be an effective way to promote your website and should be part of your overall marketing strategy. Now, a problem with this is that it can take a lot of time to search for and find related ezines.

I recommend you use the Directory of Ezines to find ezines to write articles for. Not all ezines will allow article submissions, but the Directory of Ezines has an awesome search interface that will allow you to search for only ezines that do. There are many other search parameters as well, including categories, specific keywords, ezines that allow solo ads and more.

There are many perks to becoming a member of the Directory of Ezines, especially if you become a lifetime member, which is what I am. At least check it out and see if it’s right for you.

No matter how you find potential ezines to partner with, just remember, this is free advertising for your website that has a lot of positive potential, so don’t ignore it. Ezine articles can have a huge impact on your online business.

I’ve been wanting to be a guest blogger for quite some time now but just haven’t gotten around to it. While I was browsing the CYN forums I had responded to a question that someone was asking about how to build up a list of subscribers.

That response prompted another member to ask if I would be interested in doing a guest post for their blog. I’ve been putting off, so since I was asked about it, I decided to finally take action. I wrote up the article yesterday, and after realizing how long it was turning out to be, decided to chop it up into three parts.

Email marketing is an integral part of online businesses today. I honestly don’t know what I would do without an autoresponder that takes care of marketing to my list. As an online business owner, building a list of prospects can be a very profitable endeavor.

If you look towards the top of my blog, I have a simple form on the right-hand side for entering your name and email address. This form is powered by GetResponse. All of us come across Ads that say: Work From Home, Make Money Online, Get paid for surveys, Get paid to read emails, Get paid to click, Business opportunities etc… Oh my gosh! Is it really so easy to earn money!

Please stop buying those ebooks and make money stuff. Let me tell you that all that you need to know NOW for FREE! Most of us online money seekers have lost hundreds or thousands of dollars searching for the holy-grail OR the single secret to riches!

How many have succeeded ? Very few. OK, now let’s get to the point. What makes money ? Yes, the correct answer is sales. But how do we make sales online ? Yes, using a website that sells valuable products or services. OK, the website is READY. Now what? We need traffic. Lots of it… i.e. Targeted prospects who will give at least a minute of their valuable time to read what we have offered on our website.

Now here is the catch! How to get targeted traffic ? Please don’t buy it using the guaranteed visitors/hits option. Lots of crooks make money selling guaranteed hits to dreamers like us who feel it will produce results. Sorry to say, but that 100,000 hits for $50 doesn’t work. If it was that easy, then at least half of the world would have been RICH. But that has not happened yet because it’s tough to make money till we know how to make it. One more thing to remember, a source of traffic that works for a website does not mean same traffic will work for another website. Otherwise I would have listed all traffic resources here right for you to start using and make instant profit.

These are the only things you need to Make Money Online :

1. Your own email list/ezine. Well, this is like a cash cow. You can milk it whenever you want. Just don’t over do it otherwise the cow will run away! Send emails to the members about your products/services every 3 or 7 days.

You will get sales if the emails build trust and showcase you as an expert & friend. One dollar per month per member is what you can earn on an average. So have a list of 10,000 and you will earn about 10,000 dollars per month. The more members, the more money! Join & promote email list building programs.

2. Join & promote Traffic/click-thru exchange programs.

3. Use network marketing to leverage your income. Also earn residual profits. Residual income is the one that keeps coming for a sale/activity made just once. Leveraged income is earning from other people’s efforts. The day is too short and working lot of time does not make sense. Spare more time towards your loved ones. Help your downline in the MLM earn money. They will work and you will earn. It’s as simple as that. It is better to get paid 1% of 100 people’s efforts then we doing the 100% work.

Got it? OK. Then join and promote a reliable & product driven MLM today. If you have already joined it, then promote it like crazy. But DO NOT spam! Spam is illegal and offensive. Use PPC to get instant traffic. Targeted traffic is like watering a plant. The only exception is that the plant gets drowned if we put 10,000 liters of water but an internet business doesn’t get drowned with that much of targeted traffic. An Internet business prospers. More traffic = more money. Just ensure that the visitors are really interested in what you offer.

4. Do not simply post to FFAs. Do it only after you have your OWN FFA page online. When people will post Ads to your FFA page, they will get an email from you about the confirmation. This is an opportunity for you to get the word out about your products/services.

5. Stay in touch with successful people who have made money online. Regularly communicate with your sponsors/upline in MLM programs that you join.Take their help to learn more about internet marketing.

6. Use autoresponders and lead capture pages to create a profit making funnel which accepts leads & creates downline members who act as leaders and NOT as followers.

Work From Home. Spend more time with your family. Work really hard for at least the first 2 years to live your dreams for the rest of your life. Wish you all the best!
