In the age of the Internet, it is obvious to expect to make its optimal use for enhancing the scope of business. Marketing initiatives in the social networking domain are an integral part of the overall campaign even for the most high profile organizations.

A home business benefits tremendously from on-line marketing because the expenditure can be kept to the minimum. Social networking based marketing provides an avenue for a targeted campaign that can bring in results.

It is important to understand the fundamental truth that a product needs not just marketing but targeted marketing. If a product is able to reach millions of people but not the ones who constitute its core market, then the whole initiative would turn out to be a humongous failure. This is where social media based marketing scores. A small, home based business can rely on creativity to attract people with genuine interest in the product. Bring a unique character to your business and your marketing campaign. Avoid imitating successful campaigns. Build your own buzz. Be original.

Social media also allows for a continued campaign. It need not be episodic and sporadic. Make efficient use of social networking sites by gradually building enthusiasm around the product. Highlight the efficacy of the various features and build the brand equity for the products and services. Create a buzz of quality and excellence around the product. Ensure that the product stands up to the expectations you build. Be forthright and honest on what you offer. Avoid exaggeration that may backfire on your product.

Word of mouth publicity works extremely well for a home business. In case of a home business, very often the products happen to be such that they carry a universal appeal. The buyers who see value in a product are not averse to giving it a favorable response on social networking sites. This gives even more exposure to the product and the expanse of the product’s footprint in social media continues to expand.

The buzz on networking sites provides exposure to products or services among like minded people or the ones active in the same domain. The service in turn sees an immediate penetration into the market segment it is meant for. This gives a fillip to the home business and creates the perfect platform for the product to prove its worth in its core market. Social media proves its mettle not just as a means of marketing but also as a tool for ensuring efficacy and efficiency of services. Ensure that the grievances, as and when they arise, are quickly addressed. Use social media to allow people to register their complaints and to publicize issues they face with the product. Score brownie points by making amends quickly. Highlight positive reviews.

Give immense exposure to your home business through the Internet. This medium provides great opportunities. Use it in the right manner to bring the campaign to fruition. Create a credibility quotient for your product. This will help you ward off suspicions about the authenticity of services and products offered in the on-line domain.

One of the many concerns about working from home is the issue of privacy. Is your home computer more vulnerable to security breaches than a computer at a work station of a larger company? Not necessarily, but the home business owner is still vulnerable to many risks. Here are five ways that every home-based business should protect itself.

Avoid Wi-Fi Hot Spots

Working from home requires a strong, reliable internet connection, but in order to cut costs, it can be tempting to take advantage of Wi-Fi hot spots in public places or use a neighbor’s unsecured connection instead. This can be very dangerous. According to the Federal Trade Commission, your private information can be hacked by even the most novice hackers through non-secure internet connections. If you’re serious about running a business at home, protect yourself and invest in a secure internet connection to conduct business. Make sure your connection is secured with a password that you change regularly and that your information is encrypted. If you do use hot spots, be sure to never leave your computer unattended or stay logged into the non-secure internet connection for too long.

Secure Internet Browsing

Facebook recently introduced a security setting that allows you to more securely browse their website by replacing HTTP in the address bar with HTTPS. This should be applied to other web sites you frequent that are accessed by entering a password. Furthermore, be careful where you click. You may come across ads for videos or coupons or free services, and clicking on these links can affect your computer and essentially, your whole business. Good virus protection software such as McAfee, Avast or AVG can let you know which sites are safe and which contain malware before you even click on them. Additionally, when transmitting private information over the internet, make sure the website is encrypted by looking for the closed lock icon on your browser.

Look Out for Scams

According to the Better Business Bureau, small businesses like yours are regularly targeted by confidence artists and scammers. Examples of common scams include companies offering to list you in business directories for a hefty fee; office supply scams which involve charging you for office supplies you didn’t order; and vanity award scams that require you paying upfront in order to be eligible for a business recognition that doesn’t exist. Home businesses are vulnerable to such scams, so always be vigilant of suspicious e-mails and messages, and avoid paying for anything that sounds too good to be true.

Be Mindful of Your Internet Presence

If your business is expanding exponentially, some scammers may pretend to be you or a representative of your company in order to scam customers, which can damage the reputation of your company. It is important to Google yourself regularly to see if you have any such imposters. One way to avoid this is to protect your company’s brand. You can purchase the domain of your business’ name as well as the domains of common misspellings of your company’s name so that scammers can’t. If selling a product or service, you’ll want to make sure your customers are protected, too. The Better Business Bureau offers tips on how to handle your business transactions with the utmost security.

Back Everything Up

You’ve heard it a million times before, but it cannot be stressed enough. Even though CD’s are becoming obsolete, it would still be wise to back up your data on them as well as on flash drives, external hard drives, e-mail accounts, online file storage centers, etc. There is no such thing as being too safe, and if your home business is your livelihood then it’s more than worth the effort! That being said, you must protect your backed up information the same way you’d protect your internet connection and computer. A fireproof safe is a good investment for storing hard copies of data, while storing information online will require frequent password changes.

Whether you’ve been working from home for years or are just recently making the transition into telecommuting, it’s important to get in the habit of protecting yourself and your business online. It is always better to be safe than sorry!

For twenty years, I have followed an entrepreneurial path I began in my late teens. In these twenty years, working mostly from home, I built a real estate empire and a virtual real estate business. Reflecting back over those years, I now realize many mistakes I made on that journey, even though at the time I made choices as best I could, knowing what I knew then.

If I had it to do over again, I’d do several things differently. If you are in your teens or early twenties wishing to start a home based business, I hope this can help you.

Education

Having remained a devoted entrepreneur throughout my professional years, I can see now that 3 years in college would have been sufficient for my needs. A college degree is a useful achievement if you plan to seek a position as an employee for someone else in the professional sector. However, many things I learned in 5 years in college and post graduate study didn’t have much practicable use in my home-based business ventures. Years spent in school, working hard earning 3 degrees, nobody ever asked to see my Bachelor or Master degrees when it came to my business dealings.

What counted most were my other achievements, namely my bank balances and assets. Joint Venture partners and other potential investors did not consider my education achievements as assets, but handicaps instead. In the entrepreneurial world, university education may confine you to thinking “inside the box.” In real world business applications, innovative thinking is essential. If I had bypassed college at 19 or 20, my imagination would have remained intact instead of being restricted by an overload of education, as in the real world of entrepreneurship, thinking “outside the box” is a much more effective strategy.

The Value of Mentors

My “real” education evolved based on what I learned from other successful entrepreneurs. Spending time with these individuals, whether leisurely or on a professional level, was extremely advantageous to me in the early years. Their perspectives on things, their thought processes, were totally different from the mainstream. I learned that what determines our success in our chosen path is our way of thinking. People think different depending on their choice of life, and the outcome of our life is a direct result of our thinking. Even if you work from home, the major key to success in your business is to think like a business owner, not an employee! Who you evolve into is based on what you think of the most. It took years for me to shift my thinking to be more like theirs. If I had it to do over, I’d begin relationship-building with mentor entrepreneurs much sooner.

Seeking Part-Time Employment

I understand many people seek a part-time job until their home based business takes off. If I had it to do over, I would be much more selective of part-time employment positions I accepted in my years after college. As an eager aspiring entrepreneur, joining the sales and marketing team of a successful company, even in a part-time role, would have been an invaluable skill builder for my future endeavors. If you want to learn skills to apply in your home based business, then flipping burgers at McDonalds will not give you any skill. If you have to get a part-time job, get one that gives you knowledge you can apply in your business. Absorb all the marketing and sales skills you can while working for someone else. When you’ve learned what you need to know, go out on your own. The sooner you begin working on your own prospects and ventures independently, the better.

Giving to Others

If I had it to do over, I would have given more to others, and I am not referring solely to money. You can donate time, thoughtfulness, a business tip, a helping hand, or simply letting someone know you care. There is much reward and satisfaction in giving to others as opposed to being self-involved and insensitive to others around you. In today’s economic environment, there are thousands of people that need to start a business from home. If you become successful, take time to show others.

I wish you every success in your home based business.

With industries downsizing, jobs being outsourced, and many individuals finding themselves out of work, there has been a surge in the home business industry. It’s no wonder, too, with many more opportunities available to those looking to stray from the norm.

Working at home owning your own business can be more of a reality than many realize, but fortunately, many are realizing that this is true and jumping on the home business bandwagon.

If you find yourself in the middle of looking for a job and happen to live in the Los Angeles, CA area, there’s an opportunity this coming weekend you don’t want to overlook.

Work at Home Business Expo

November 13th and 14th, the Fairplex Expo Center at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds is holding a Home Business Expo for anyone that has ever considered a home based business but have been hesitant to invest without meeting representatives from the company face-to-face.

The fear of getting scammed has many reluctant to ever get started with a home business opportunity of any kind, online and offline. I know this to be true as I get emails every now and then from people claiming their fears and not knowing who to trust. It’s a shame because there are many legitimate companies out there that are adamant about helping people, rather than scamming them.

My goal with this site and blog is to reassure people that yes, you can make money online or offline with your own home business.

That’s the purpose of this Expo as well. People are still worried about the economy, and if you’re looking to spend more time with your family or work around the tough economic conditions, there are a variety of work at home plans that could fit your needs.

What You’ll Find at the Expo

The featured Keynote speaker is Dr. Laura Schlessinger, who is a long-time supporter of Home Based Business Opportunities. Laura will be attending the event to give key advice to attendees who either already have an at-home business or are looking to start.

The first 100 people that visit Dr. Laura’s table will receive a complimentary copy of one of her books.

Seminars

Saturday seminars include:

  • “Succeeding Online” with Joe Martinico
  • “Building Your Business Through Greater Customer Retention” with Jay Deubler
  • “Master the Principles of Selling” with Ursula Mentjes; “Effective Networking & Referral Marketing” with Laura Bruno
  • “Choose the Best Home Business for You” with Kurt Inagaki
  • “Funding your Freedom Dreams” with Mindy Schinnerer

Sunday seminars include:

  • “The 5 Basic Keys to Successfully Starting Your Own Business” by Mia Moore
  • “Small Business and Social Media” by John Chalverus
  • “How to Choose the Right Network Marketing Company” by Renee Kim
  • “My Trade America” with Steve Halen

Admissions is $10 or $8 advance online, and children 12 and under are free. The admission fee can be applied to an investment in a Home Based Business program, product, or service with participating exhibitors making the event entirely free to the public.

Their Mission: “To put Americans back to work by empowering each of us to control our own professional destiny through a home based business model”

For more information about the Expo, you should visit www.wahbexpo.com.

Now, if you can’t make it to the Expo or don’t happen to live in the Los Angeles area like myself, but you’re still interested in starting your own online home business, here are a list of opportunities that I’ve found to be legitimate and worth looking into:

Some of the opportunities are similar in nature, while others are unique in their own way. In any case, there should be something there that will fit your interest. If not, let me know!

“Some say opportunity knocks only once. That is not true. Opportunity knocks all the time, but you have to be ready for it. If the chance comes, you must have the equipment to take advantage of it.” ~  Louis L’Amour

Senior citizens play an integral part of the world we live in. It’s not just the younger generation that shows an entrepreneurial spirit. In fact, if it wasn’t for the older generation of today, we very well may not have many of the opportunities that we take for granted. At an older and wiser age, there is so much that senior citizens can offer us in the form of a home based business.

The senior citizens of today represent potential entrepreneurs in the immediate future who can serve us with the right services and products. Current statistics show that 70 % of the people in the U.S. are turning 50 at a rapid rate of 3-4 million a year. As these people are aging at a rapid rate, there is a lot of potential for them to contribute to the economy by setting up small businesses of their own.

Those that are setting up their own home based business are opting for insurance needed for business so that they are starting their business in a financially secured way. If you’re a senior who is looking for some business ideas to boost your income, here are three ideas to consider.

Medical Claims Aid

Most seniors often overpay for their medical costs as they don’t really understand the facts about insurance and what it takes to file a claim that is accompanying accidents and illnesses. If you start a business as a medical claims assistant, you will need to deal with medical claims and compare the medical records of the client with the medical bills. You would also perform the task of ensuring that your clients are charged accurately according to their medical conditions. You’re required to have enough medical knowledge to carry on this business successfully. Don’t forget to get the insurance needed for business so that you can get back your money in the event of any unfortunate incident. Better to be safe than sorry.

Nutrition Consultant

With age, most seniors develop some poor health conditions like diabetes, heart disease and other health problems. If you start a business as a nutrition consultant, you can educate your clients on the food habits and meal planning that will help them get rid of and help prevent diseases. In order to start this kind of home business, you need to take a certificate course because most states require that you have a certificate and license.

Senior Care Consultant

Senior care consultant is usually the professional name given to nurses, gerontologists and other professionals who have experience in aging matters and taking care of the elderly. If you become a senior care consultant, you will have to provide advice and information to adults, seniors or caregivers. You may also have to provide them with information on long-term health care techniques.

In Conclusion

If you’re getting close to retirement age, or perhaps you’re still considered young but are looking for a job that you do at home, consider these three viable home based business options. Just make sure that if you do start your own business that you get the proper insurance needed for business so that you safeguard your investment from suffering any kind of loss in any unforeseen circumstances.

I took the weekend off (3 day weekend) to celebrate Independence Day and enjoy being with family and friends. It was great to just put business aside and relax and enjoy myself. The fireworks show in State College at Beaver Stadium was amazing; one of the top ranked shows in the nation. It was a blast… no pun intended.

I took pictures throughout the show along with a 40 second video of the finale. If you would like to check them out, just add me as a friend on Facebook. Otherwise, one of the pictures I took is to the right.

When I first started my own home-based business a few years ago, I thought that no matter what my first home business website would work. I thought I had everything important in place and the website was looking great. But the reality of my situation had to sink in eventually; even though I had an excellent website, and what I thought was successful home business information I was missing visitors, rendering my online presence useless.

Two years later, I took a second look, but this time with a careful look at all options. I would learn about Search Engine Optimization and how it can influence a business. Through it, I was able to add life to my websites as well as a sizeable amount of money.

If your website is currently suffering from a lack of visitors, the first place to look for answers is your website’s keywords and their search engine performance. Often we can build links for our website, writing content with the intention of ranking it. But none of that will matter if you don’t have the right keywords. There is a lot of money to be made in internet marketing if this step is taken seriously.

First of all, check the keywords you decided to compete for when you started your campaign. Review their usefulness and relative competition. Once you have done so, visit Google’s Adwords Keywords tool or use WordTracker. These tools will help you see clearly where opportunities in your niche could be for keywords.

If you are able to find some additional keywords that you should be ranking your website for, construct a plan outlining what on-page and off-page content will need to be produced. This is to get your website appearing on the front page for that term. Once your plan has been completed, stay focused on the job at hand. To rank higher in the search engines, you need to be consistently taking action.

As internet marketers, we often get excited and dive into projects without spending enough time working through our foundations. Looking for keywords is an essential step; a website cannot succeed in the search engines without it. Make sure you take the time to review your website’s keywords and take action if necessary so that your website doesn’t stay hidden from your potential customers.

The following is a guest post by Sam Bakker…

I recall when I first started trying to use blogging to make money online. I had arrived at the entrance of a cyber metropolis armed with an idea and a daft look on my face. It was a multifaceted space teeming with online users, all I had to do was establish myself and I’d be crowded with customers in no time. I had bought a product that would teach me how to build a home-based business. It told me I should start a blog and begin sharing with the rest of the internet world how to be successful making money through a home-based business.

I opened an account with Blogger.com and put my hands to the keyboard. For two months I typed away, completing a design and posting content up on a daily basis. For all this effort, I had one member and no sign of traffic. My blog was floating around in an alleyway when I wanted it to be across the street from Facebook. I wasn’t making money and my website wasn’t going anywhere.

It wasn’t until a year later that I found out (and corrected) what I had done wrong. In this article today, I am going to discuss what mistakes I made in my first attempt to make money blogging online and how you can avoid them. By dodging these classic mistakes, your journey to success will help you obtain an internet marketing lifestyle that is greatly to your advantage.

Firstly, it must be said that before anything else, you must plan out what your blog’s central focus will be. As is the general nature of entrepreneurs, we get an idea and jump in head-first without planting a base for ourselves. Planning is essential especially when it comes to blogging; you not only need to identify your audience and the value you can offer them, but you also need to find effective keywords.

Keywords are the driving force behind a blog’s organic search engine traffic. You need to find the most effective ones using a tool such as “Google Adwords Keywords” to research. This will show you where you can get your search engine traffic from and what terms will be most profitable when it comes to making money. If you launch your blog without keywords in mind, often Google will struggle to place you in the index. Much of the time this means that your blog’s potential is capped very early on and your chance of getting decent traffic flow from Google is reduced. Be sure that you conduct the appropriate keyword research for your website before buying your domain name.

When you first launch your blog online, it feels great. However, now the challenge is in getting it seen. In order for search engines to rank your website based on targeted key terms, you will need to generate some external links back to your website. Use websites such as Ezine Articles, Squidoo and write for other websites in your niche to get your blog rising in the search engines and producing traffic.

Use these tips to ensure that your blog doesn’t end up like my first one, gathering dust along some forgotten nook in cyberspace. Instead, implement the techniques I have discussed with you here to get your blog off to an excellent start.

Do you suffer from information overload? When i was first learning internet marketing, I was presented with so much information that I couldn’t make any sense of it. I felt even more dumb about the concept than before. You could say I suffered from information overload syndrome.

This occurrence happens quite frequently among people. There are ways to avoid this from happening to you so you don’t feel lost and confused. If you’re looking to start your own home based business and learn how to market and advertise, there’s a lot of information to sift through. Even in the corporate business world, this is a huge problem.

Dealing with a lot of information all at once can be a nightmare. It can literally make your head spin, and you’re left wondering where to even start. Here’s what I did to combat my information overload problem and how you can do the same.

Tips to prevent information overload:

  • Take a deep breath and relax
  • Take a break (as long as you need) and let your mind sort through the information you just read. Go back later to anything that still doesn’t make sense.
  • Evaluate where you are right now, and where you want to be
  • Set small goals for yourself, utilizing only the pertinent information to reach those goals
  • Tackle only one project at a time (this tip is a lifesaver!)

These tips are geared more towards entrepreneurs looking to work from home who are faced with heaps of information right from the start. Of course, these tips can be applied to any individual, but they should be tailored specifically to your needs.

The other option is to not do anything about your information overload problem, in which case you could end up like the people in this video…

Many Australian families with children of school age often find it challenging to balance work and family life. Many employers demand strict adherence to the firm’s hours. When a child gets ill at school, for example, the mum must leave work and bring the child home. You may have found yourself in this type of dilemma before and know how frustrating it can be.

This need for flexibility can be viewed in broader terms as a desire to gain personal freedom. The most alluring aspect of starting a home based business is the opportunity to gain control over your own life. As a home-based business owner you can shape your work life around your own goals. There are no bosses to follow, no corporate cultures to live by and no rigid work schedules. If you enjoy getting up early, you can start work early and finish early. If you enjoy getting up late, you can start your workday later and finish later. You have the freedom to work and earn as you choose.

A Home-Based Business Can Save You Time

You can gain financial and time benefits by working from home. Just think of the time and transportation costs you can save by not having to commute to an office each day. Even if you commute half an hour each way to and from work, it adds up to 5 hours each week, or 250 hours each year. You probably can find much better ways to use this time. If you now drive to work, you can eventually save thousands of dollars by reducing the amount you spend on gas and car maintenance costs by starting a home based business.

A Home-Based Business Can Be Beneficial for Family Relationships

Many decide to start home-based businesses to strengthen family relationships. Most parents have to work full time just to provide for their families. They don’t have the time to enjoy parenthood. Home-based businesses makes it possible for parents to enjoy parenting. Husbands and wives can help each other with various parts of the business while older children can also be directly involved. Even younger children gain from seeing how business is conducted. Children learn about working together as a team and goal setting, which often isn’t taught in their schools. A home business can be an important part of the child’s education and help build stronger family bonds.

A Home-Based Business Can Reduce Stress

Many Australians have chosen to start home businesses to reduce stress. Much of the stress today is caused by the attempt to juggle work and family commitments. With your own home business you can stay at home to care for a sick child, or older relative. You can prepare and share dinner with your family without feeling rushed or stressed.

Office politics and personality conflicts are another part of corporate life and are causes of work-related stress. By working from home you can decrease stress by avoiding these politics and personality conflicts. You can also decrease stress by freeing yourself from the deadlines that are imposed on you from above. In addition, having to travel to your work adds stress at the beginning and end of your day. Many people find this to be a highly stressful part of their lives.

Home-based Business Trends

Home-Based Business is becoming more and more popular in the Asia-Pacific region in countries such as Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, The Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea.

A recent article from NBC News presented several women who operate successful businesses from their homes. The article also showed the government’s positive attitude towards the trend. Several government officials quoted in the publication believe that home based businesses add entrepreneurial vibrancy to the communities in which they are located.

Home-based Businesses are becoming more popular in Australia. In June 2004, there were 282,400 home-based businesses in the state of NSW in Australia. This represented 63.8% of small businesses in New South Wales .
