Proven Strategies to Increase Website Traffic and Generate Sales
This post is going to contain the simple, yet effective techniques I have learned during my time online to generate targeted traffic and generate sales. These are strategies I’m using for my own online business and have found to be working well and improving over time.
If you’ve been following along with us, my last post was about a struggling internet marketer who is reaching out in a desperate attempt to generate sales with his affiliate marketing website.
One of the questions asked was, “How do I drive traffic to my site that can generate sales?”
This is going to be the topic of this post, and I’ll be going very in-depth, starting with the basics and moving towards the more advanced strategies.
I apologize in advance if this turns into a very lengthy post, but please bare with me as it will be well worth your time to read through everything.
So let’s begin, shall we?
The very first thing you must understand is that everything revolves around keywords. Keywords are the life-blood of websites and how they become seen by internet users using search engines.
SEO (search engine optimization) is the foundation of using keywords effectively, and this is how you’re going to target specific internet users to generate sales online.
Rather than going in-depth on the subject of SEO on this post, I have a few previous posts that should cover this subject thoroughly enough for you to understand. Please check them out, and if you have questions use the comment section:
Optimizing your web page for specific keywords is critical and is the foundation for which you’ll build the rest of your marketing efforts upon. Seriously, nothing else matters until you’ve done this. Don’t ignore it!
One thing I’ve learned is that backlinks are KING. Okay, so content is still KING, but backlinks are a very close second, and here’s why. Backlinks to your website or web pages are what helps to drive your site or pages higher in search engine results pages when someone searches for a specific keyword phrase. See how this is coming together?
Without building backlinks to your site, you won’t generate enough traffic to your site to generate sales. Now I know what you’re thinking here. There are other ways to generate traffic without building backlinks, and that’s true. However, the best traffic is free search engine traffic, and the only way to get it is to rank on the first page in Google, or Yahoo and Bing. I’d focus on Google as it produces over 70% of search traffic across the entire web.
Now that you understand the importance of building backlinks and getting your site or web pages to the top of search engines, you now need to start the backlink building process. There are numerous ways to go about this, and luckily for you, I’ve written many posts on the subject. Here they are:
- Improve Search Engine Rankings the Easy Way
- Get 80 High PR One Way Backlinks Each Month
- Build Long-Term Traffic to Your Work From Home Site with Article Marketing
- Build Your Online Business with Article Marketing
- Forum Signatures
- Free Traffic System
Remember when building backlinks that you want to use your keywords for the web page you’re linking to. This is the only way that your backlinks are going to be effective in boosting your search engine rankings.
Okay, so you now have a great start in getting backlinks; however, I’m not done just yet.
Well… sorta. I have a post planned that will discuss another very effect backlink building strategy and will be posted soon, so stay tuned for that.
Hopefully right now you have a solid understanding of doing keyword research and web page optimization, and how it all ties in to building backlinks. This is all part of building targeted website traffic that will result in sales.
As always, if you have any questions about anything discussed here, leave a comment below.
My next post will discuss the second question asked by a struggling internet marketer, but in the meantime, start applying the tips I mentioned today to your website, and you’ll soon see an increase in traffic and internet income.

Hi Alan,
you mention forum signatures as a way to get more backlinks, but what is your opinion about blog link building? I really think it is THE way to go nowadays.
I mean, we can both agree that there are TOO many web directories on the Internet and Google doesn’t pay attention to many of them. Therefore, blogs are a pretty good alternative.
What is your opinion?

@Angela@Webdesign Roosendaal,
Hi Angela, that’s a good question. I do agree that blogs are great for building backlinks. I regularly comment on other blogs, which in doing so earns me backlinks and gains readers.
However, I still feel posting in forums and setting up a forum signature is very effective. You can also build up direct traffic this way as well. Google loves forums just as much and will crawl a forum multiple times a day as they’re constantly updated.

Yes, backlinks are the glue that holds a website together in terms of search engine rankings.
Making the backlinks actually aren’t all that time-consuming, but rather the process in which you take. For example, forum posting and blog commenting could take an hour or two for at least 10 backlinks with each method. Writing articles for article directories or web 2.0 sites would take a lot longer for the same amount of links. It all depends what links you want and the quality you’re aiming for.

Many people don’t realise that individual pages of a website should be optimised for their own specific keywords because the search engines treat them on an individual basis.
Much the same applies to indexing, just because the home page is indexed in a website it does not necessarily mean a page where a link is placed will be indexed and without it, the link is useless.

So true, Steve. People often go after those highly searched for terms thinking they’ll rake in the traffic, only to find out the traffic never comes. I tell people to start low and slowly work their way up to the more competitive terms only after they’re ranking well and bringing in traffic for those less searched for terms. They’ll see traffic sooner and won’t be disappointed from the start.

I would recommend to continue building backlinks for your keywords. I would first focus on the keywords that you do sometimes appear on the first page for, and then start increasing links for your other keywords.

@Alan Mater, That’s what I am doing right now. My problem is some of the keywords are too broad. I was kind of surprised to see my site in the first page. Those keywords have a monthly search volume of 720 – 1500, not too much that’s why it was easier for my site to appear in the first page of Google.
My problem is those keywords don’t convert too well because they are too broad. I have several specific keywords that I’m targeting, I am building lot of back-links, so that I may have a chance getting ranked for them.

@Artwork Pieces, A lot of backlinks is not enough. I learned that using your keywords as Anchor Text on your backlinks helps a lot in the SERPs ranking.

Yeah, I would focus on the more long-tail keywords and build anchor text links around them. Once you’re ranking well for them and bringing in traffic, then ranking for the broader terms will become easier. Just make sure the broad terms are still specific enough that the traffic is going to convert.

Great tips on getting traffic to your site. I especially like the idea of using a check list.
I would also add the following tip: Search for your services- not by the name of your business, but by what you are offering. Discover what the top ranking sites are doing right (ie what their bank links are) and copy what they are doing, then make your site even better by using accessibility tips and offering something that brings your readers back time and time again.

Hi Alan,
Your title says it all. You need traffic to generate sales. And depending on your niche you have you don’t really need that much traffic, just targeted traffic. If it’s one in which the demand for the product is consistently high, then more sub pages on your site with more related products to sell.
The key thing I learned in 2011 is that reaching no. 1 in Google while it’s good is not as important as staying in that position especially when you have so many competitors all ranking for the same keyword.
