June Comment Contest – Win Cash and Prizes!
June is underway, and I’m excited to announce the first ever comment contest on this blog.
It’s been a long time coming, and I believe it’s time to start rewarding my faithful readers who take the time to comment and leave their feedback on my posts. Of course, I hope to bring in new readers as well and keep them coming back.
Contest Prizes
Prize winnings include (in no particular order):
1. $25 cash prize offered by Dennis Edell.
2. One-month banner ad (125X125) provided by Peter Lee, plus 10 free .edu backlinks package.
3 & 4. One-month free membership to David Hurley’s Internet Marketing Articles PLR site, offered by David Hurley and myself.
2 separate winners will each get one month free membership access. The membership fee will be refunded to you in full through PayPal by myself after your purchase. More details will be provided to the winners.
5. One-month link or banner ad on the home page of ReplaceYourSalary.com. Link will be “do follow.”
Contest Rundown
Winning is very easy and only requires that you comment regularly on this blog to have a chance to win.
Simply put, be on the “Top Readers” list at the end of June, and you’ll win one of the prizes mentioned above. The first-place winner will get to choose his/her prize. The rest of the winners will be awarded the remaining prizes in the order listed, as well as the order in which you won.
To know if you’re on the “Top Readers” list, you can find it on the right side-bar between NetworkedBlogs and Useful Links. It lists the top 5 commentators throughout the entire month, so as long as you’re on the list when I check it on June 30th, you’ll win.
Don’t quite understand how it works? Leave a comment below.
BONUS:
Now, here’s where it gets really fun. Everyone has a chance to win the bonus, so listen up.
Since this is my very first comment contest, I’d really like to get the word out about it, and I need your help.
Anyone that spreads the word about the contest and provides proof of doing so, you will receive a permanent link with your chosen anchor text on the winning results post that will follow the end of the contest.
It doesn’t matter how you go about spreading the word, just make sure that any and all links point back to this post.
Comment Rules
Unfortunately, my blog gets quite a bit of spam and useless comments. Many never see the light of day.
I don’t quite have a comment policy in place yet; although, I’ve been implementing it since the beginning, and I’m going to be cracking down even more now that the contest is underway.
In order for your comments to count, you’ll need to follow these 2 simple rules:
1. Use a REAL name. I have KeywordLuv installed so that you can use your “name @ keywords” in the name field when leaving a comment (first name is fine). I ask that you please respect this.
Or…
You can leave your name at the bottom of your comment. Either way is fine, but you must include your real name. If I don’t see your real name, your comment will be deleted without thinking twice. Sorry, but like I said, I get a lot of comment spam.
2. Provide value. Along the lines of comment spam, if your comment provides absolutely no value whatsoever, then poof, your comment will be deleted without warning. This will be heavily enforced, maybe even more so than rule #1.
I can’t stand stupid little “hey, nice post” type comments. Most of you will know what I mean by this. What I’m looking for are comments that add to the discussion in some way, provide your own thoughts on the issue, etc. Actually taking the time to leave a meaningful comment will go along way and only benefit you.
OK, that’s it! You have the details, now start commenting.
Note: if you want to make sure you never miss an update on my blog, you may want to subscribe to my RSS Feed. Just sayin’.
Thanks!

I’m just not sure how I’ll figure out the #6 winner, if that’s the case.

Here is my first comment..lol. I like the concept of you contest. It gets the readers a chance to see if they like your content by giving them an incentive to read your blog post each day. I think you will gain a lot of long time subscribers this way. In fact I am subscribing right now.

@Adnan, A comment contest usually works well.
This blog has been running since October 2008. Overall my site has been around since 2005.

I think this is actually really smart for both tracking and gaining participants.
Since the top commentors plugin already tracks the results, you don’t have to hunt down tweets, guest posts, mentions and all the other things bloggers do for contests.
It also gives a really easy incentive to participate and keep up on the blog.
Great idea for the contest, I’ll have to try and keep up with everyone

@Murlu, “Since the top commentors plugin already tracks the results, you don’t have to hunt down tweets, guest posts, mentions and all the other things bloggers do for contests.”
I’m not sure what you mean by that. The top commenter plug-in doesn’t track all of that, only the comments.
Anyway, good luck!

Hi Alan,
I’m actually excited for prize #2, quite enticing
I do have a prediction on who’s going to win this contest, I’m guessing that it would be Dennis, he is quite active online, I can mostly see his comments on other great blogs, hmm though he is part of the contest’s admin, so is he qualified to join?
LOL, but anyway, I’m willing to take that as a challenge!
I have been a fan of Dennis’ wise words and I think it’s an honor to duel with one of the industry’s finest.
Regards to you Alan and Dennis,

Dennis is a great guy and knows his stuff. That’s the spirit!

I thank you for all the kind words, but now worries; I’m excusing myself from the contest. With only 5 prizes, 1 of which is from me, I’d like to leave it up to everyone else to fight over.
Besides, I may not have won anyway, check this out…

Hey a little late to the show, but great idea Alan having a contest. What a great way to get people to leave a good comments and add to the conversation. I too have had a lot of people leave either bad or spam comments. And even use auto blogging software crap. It’s pretty easy to spot comments from people that don’t even take 2 minutes and read your post. Nonetheless I did hear Mr. Google man, Matt Cutts recommend having a plugin called wp-spamfree. Which I did install on several of my WP sites, that were getting bombarded with spammer comments and auto blogging comment software and the difference was 10 fold. Thanks

@Mike@Get more website traffic,
Better late than never.
I actually use Akismet, which blocks 98% of all spam. Every now and then a few get through, but having Akismet in place is a total time-saver.
I haven’t heard of wp-spamfree. Sounds like it would be just as good.

Sorry to bud in so late here everyone, but Askimet is no longer free.
Do you know of a free spam block plugin for WordPress? Askimet worked so well, I’m hoping to find something similar. Any suggestions?

@Brent @ Turnkey website design,
No worries, Brent. Actually, I never liked Akismet, for a few different reasons in which I’ll be posting about next month.
There are a couple good, free plug-ins I like. The first one is GASP (http://www.growmap.com/growmap-anti-spambot-plugin/) which I’m using now. The second is WP Captcha Free (wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-captcha-free/.
I also use Simple Trackback Validation (wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-trackback-validation/) to get rid of Tracback spam.
Hope they help!

@Alan Mater – Perfection! I especially like the Simple Trackback Validation plugin.
I really never looked into Askimet too much, it just seemed to work well. Looking forward to your post about its shortcomings.
